Thelma Van Alstyne

Thelma Selina Scribbans was born in Victoria, British  Columbia in 1913. She studied at the Vancouver School of Art, but was mostly self-taught.

For some time she worked as a secretary. Once settled in Toronto she became more active in the arts scene creating representational works. 

She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy back 1977.

Her work has been exhibited at the Pollack Gallery and the Loop Gallery in Toronto, among others.

A naturalist and healer at heart, she practiced Buddhism, and learned tai chi in Toronto in the 1980's. She taught the wellness technique at the Ruth Clarke Centre in Port Hope. 

She died in 2008, in Port Hope, Ontario.
