Robert Baigent

Robert Richard Baigent was born in 1830 in Winchester, England. It is unknown when he came to Canada. 

Baigent was a teacher and painter of landscapes, portraits, still life and bird studies. He exhibited works done in pencil, crayon and sepia drawings. He also explored watercolours and oil paint creating landscapes and historical paintings. He was a drawing master of Upper Canada College in Toronto from 1870-89.

He exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts from 1880-1888 and the American Alliance of Musesums in 1881. 

 Recently a watercolour by Richard Baigent is dated 1863 has been discovered depicting a blockhouse from the 1830's. The blockhouses were intended to guard the roads to Toronto from the north during times of civil unrest, they became popular subject matter for artists during the 1860's. 

Baigent died in 1890.
