Rita Mount

Rita Mount was born in 1888. She studied at the Cercle Internationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the Art Association of Montréal under William Brymner, the Art Students’ League under Frank V. Du Mond, and took courses in landscape painting with John Fabian Carlson in New York state.

Upon her return to Canada and Mount established a studio in Montréal. She often traveled all over North America, driving to Banff in 1934, and to Victoria and Yellowstone Park, Wyoming in 1937 seeking new places to paint and sketch. She also visited Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and the Gaspe. 

Her work has been exhibited as part of group shows, as well as solo shows, at Continental Galleries, Watson Art Galleries, Klinkhoff Gallery, Morency Frères Ltee, the New York World’s Fair, the Coronation Exhibition, London, England, and the British Empire Overseas Exhibition, among others.

She was a member of The Independent Art Association, and The Royal Canadian Academy, of which she was elected an associate in 1938, among others. 

Her work is part of the collections at the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée de la Province de Quebec and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, among others. 

She died in 1967.
