Richard Halliday

Richard Halliday was born in Vancouver,B.C in 1939. He began early training at the Vancouver School of Art with Jack Shadbolt, Roy Kiyooka, Ron Thom and Peter Aspell among others. He graduated in 1963 with honours in Painting and Drawing. Halliday also attended many of the early Emma Lake Workshops. He also attended the Instituto San Miguel Allende, Mexico in 1964. 

In 1964 Halliday began a teaching career in Brandon Manitoba as Director of the Brandon Allied Art Center, until 1966.

In 1966 he received an Emily Carr Foundation Scholarship to continue studies in Art History and Film at Sir George Williams University in Montréal. He received his Bachelor of Fine Art Degree in 1976, and pursued graduate studies for two years at Concordia University.  

In 1968 Halliday was appointed Director of the Montréal Museum School of Art and Design, for ten years he was the director of the private art college at the Museum.

In August 1978 he was became part of the full time teaching staff  at the Alberta College of Art and Design, a department in the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Calgary Alberta. He was appointed department head of the Art College in 1982, he played an important role in establishing the College of Art and Design as it's own entity. 

Halliday retired from the Alberta College of Art and Design in 2002. He was honoured with the designation of Lecturer Emeritus in 2003.

Halliday is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy and is a founding member of the Artists Circle, Calgary Contemporary Arts Society. He is represented in numerous collections including, but not limited to, The Canada Council Art Bank, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Brandon University, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Calgary Allied Art Foundation, Nickle Arts Museum, Glenbow Museum, MacKenzie Art Gallery, and the Canadiana Collection, National Capital Commission, Ottawa.
