John Meredith Smith, was born in 1933 in Fergus, Ontario. He studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1950-53. As an artist he identified himself as John Meredith, disregarding his surname. His brother, artist and one of the founding members of Painters Eleven, William Ronald did the same.
Meredith had his first solo exhibition in 1958. His works abstract in nature comment on the acquisition of knowledge through experience, rather than theory, and human essence. His work was often complex , colourful, and patterned. He worked in paint and ink.
His works is part of many corporate and private collections. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Academy.
He died in 2000.
