John Bennett

Mr. Bennett has been drawing since the age of five or six. In 1942 he received a degree with Honours in English from the University of Toronto. In 1952  he received his Master of Education, from the University of Toronto.Before leaving for the war Bennett finished university and got married. 

In1943 he was sent to the Atlantic. In June 1944 he landed on the beaches of Normandy. He took his painting supplies and carried them through France, Belgium, Holland and England for the remainder of the war. He was never an official war artist however he was assigned as a camouflage officer. Over the course of his two years in Europe, Bennett painted many watercolours. Seventy-eight have been recently accepted by the National War Museum in Ottawa to be part of its permanent collection.

Following the war Bennett went on to teach art in Toronto, and retired in 1982 as co-ordinator of visual arts for the Toronto Board. 

His paintings now hang in private homes, galleries and institutions across the country. 

Bennett is a member of The Ontario Society of Artists, The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts,  Candian Society of Painters in Watercolour. He is also an Honorary Member of both the American Watercolour Society and the Japanese Watercolour Society. 

Bennett lives in the Veterans Wing at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the largest veterans care hospital in Canada and participates in their 'art therapy' program.
