Janet Mitchell was borin i n1912. She studied at the Institute of Technology and Art, Calgary, taking night classes. She also attended summer workshops at the Banff School of Fine Arts, in 1959 she studied with Gordon Smith. Besides the workshops and night class she was mostly self-taught.
Mitchell often worked in watercolours, sometimes using oil paint. She created semi-abstract works that used lots of colour and movement.
Beginning in 1946, Mitchell had several solo exhibitions in Calgary and Toronto.
Her work is part of the collections the National Gallery of Canada, and in a number of University collections.
Mitchell was a member of the Alberta Society of Artists, Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, and The Royal Canadian Academy of Art.
She died in 1998.
