Russell, George Horne was born in Banff, Scotland in 1861. He studied at the Alberdeen School of Art and the South Kensington School of Art.
In 1889, he moved to Canada settling in Montréal.
He was a member of The Royal Canadian Academy and from 1922 to 1926, he was the president of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
Russell devoted much of his time to mastering portrait painting.
He died in 1933.
